Description
The medication is a combination of a type of penicillin antibiotics which has broad-spectrum for bacterial infections. It functions by stopping the growth of bacteria which results in treating the infection.
PHARMACOLOGY
PHARMACODYNAMICS:-
AMOXYCILLIN – The growth of bacterial cell wall is hindered as Amoxycillin interrupts with the cross-linkage between linear peptidoglycan polymer chains which form a major component of the cell walls of gram-positive as well as gram-negative bacteria.
CLAVULANIC ACID- It binds to amoxicillin to inhibit Beta-lactamase to inactivate amoxicillin from having an expanded spectrum of activity. It also inhibits the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBP`S) which inhibits the formation of peptidoglycan ( a major component of bacteria`s cell wall).
PHARMACOKINETICS:-
Amoxicillin
Distribution: – Readily into most body tissues and fluids except the brain and spinal fluid.
Half-Life:- After oral admin: 1.3 hr (amoxicillin). About 50-70% of amoxicillin
Excretion: – Unchanged in urine during the 1st 6 hr after admin.
CLAVULANIC ACID
Clavulanic acid has a high affinity for and binds to certain β-lactamases that generally inactivate amoxicillin by hydrolyzing its β-lactam ring. Clavulanate potassium combines with amoxicillin which extends the antibacterial spectrum of amoxicillin to include many bacteria normally resistant to amoxicillin and other penicillins and cephalosporins.
INDICATIONS
AMOXICILLIN – CLAVULANATE POTASSIUM combination is treated bacterial infections caused by amoxicillin resistant bacteria.
